We are Peter and Irene Willson from Butlers Farmhouse and we have been in business as a B&B since June 2009. We visited many B&Bs in both the UK and the US before we decided to start our own and so far its been very successful!

Irene is a professional gardener and has opened our garden every year for the Yellow Book (National Garden Scheme) for the last 10 years, and I am a full time musician - pianist and organist running a band and an a cappella choir.

We have three very special double rooms that have been designed to appeal to the luxury end of the market and we have built up a reputation of providing very extensive and delicious breakfasts. We have a system that enables guests to choose exactly what they want for breakfast, not everybody wants the full English! A lot of our foreign guest really appreciate that.

We are very lucky to have Herstmonceux village on our doorstep as there are 2 pubs (The Brewer’s Arms and the Woolpack) which both serve food, together with a top rated gourmet restaurant (The Sundial) an Indian restaurant and a bistro, our guests can also find good pubs at Cowbeech and Boreham Street nearby. There is also a full range of Italian, Chinese, pubs and coffee and tea shops in the town of Hailsham only 3 miles away.

There is a superb view of the South Downs - which is great walking and cycling country - and on a clear day the Long Man of Wilmington can be seen from our house and garden.

Butlers Farmhouse was also the home of a film star called Peggy Cummings who lived here in the 50s and 60s and we still occasionally get fan mail for her!

Charleston Farmhouse Virginia Woolfs house (The Bloomsbury Set)
Glyndebourne Opera House Many guests who go to the operas there.
Farley Farm The home of the artist Roland Penrose and Photographer Lee Miller (great friend of Picasso who visited this part of Sussex in 1950).
Alfriston The delightful village of Alfriston is nearby with the first building the National Trust ever owned - The Alfriston Clergy House.
Michelham Priory Michelham Priory is also a favourite with our guests as are the great gardens at Sissinghurst and Great Dixter.
Eastbourne Half an hour away is the seaside town of Eastbourne with 3 theatres often giving pre-London West End shows. Hastings and Battle with all the 1066 connections are again only half an hour away. The delightful De la Warr Pavilion in Bexhill,(20 minutes away) is also worth a visit as it has been recently restored to its former 1930s Art Deco splendour, has a large theatre and is an international art exhibition centre in its own right.
Google earth has sent a vehicle down our lane last summer and its worth having a look at that to give you an idea of the property.
